A giant onshore wind power project with a generation capacity of one million kilowatts has been put into operation after being connected to the national power grid to supply power to the Xing’an League of Mongolia Autonomous Region inland (northern China).

Built by the China General Nuclear Power Group (CGN), the first million kilowatt project, which is a mountainous wind farm, is capable of generating more than three billion kWh of electricity on the grid per year.

It can save more than 920,000 tons of standard coal and reduce nearly 2.5 million tons of carbon dioxide emissions every year.

The CGN claims to have made many advances in the execution of the wind project.

“This project is the first onshore wind power project in China with a voltage level of 500 kV connected to the power grid system. It is also the first new power project that transmits electric power generated by a system ultra-high voltage transmission to the national power grid,” said Li Yilun, deputy general manager of CGN.

China contributed 80% of all new offshore installations last year, making 2021 the fourth year the country led the world in new installations, according to the Global Offshore Wind Report 2022 published by the Global Wind Energy Council (GWEC).

“This is an astonishing level of growth, as it took Europe three decades to bring its total offshore wind capacity to a similar level,” GWEC said.
