Heroic Vosotros drain killer shot as Gilas 3×3 stuns seeded Mongolia
Super sharpshooter Almond Vosotros strikes in a giant shot as Gilas Pilipinas 3×3 shocks No.1 Mongolia to book a semi-final seat
MANILA, Philippines — Almond Vosotros had a game for the ages for Gilas Pilipinas 3×3 after draining a game-winning brace to stun seeded Mongolia 21-20 in the FIBA Asia Cup Quarter-Finals 3×3 in Singapore on Sunday, July 10.
Vosotros looked set to tow Gilas to an upset win after sinking a late two for an 18-15 lead, but the veteran Mongols pulled through with a 5-0 pivot swing to take the lead, 20-18, putting highlighted by a Dulguun Enkhbat and -a bucket.
However, an untimely foul by Mongolia at 1:37 sent Vosotros over the line for two free throws instead of one, as they were on their seventh foul.
The PBA 3×3 champion made the first and missed the second, but Samboy de Leon caught the miss and returned the ball to Vosotros, who drilled the killing blow in cold blood for the win.
Vosotros completely atoned for Gilas’ 11-21 loss to China with 8 big points, followed by 7 from De Leon.
“Every time I’m open, I shoot it. That’s my role on this team,” Vosotros said after the thriller. “We didn’t give up.”
Joseph Eriobu scored 5 while Lervin Flores netted a point for the Philippine team who now advance to the semi-finals later at 6:15 p.m. against New Zealand, who beat Japan, 16-14, in the another quarter-final duel.
