Laos and Mongolia agree to strengthen relations and expand cooperation
VIENTIANE (Vientiane Times/Asia News Network): Laos and Mongolia have agreed to strengthen ties and expand cooperation following talks between their foreign ministers, which took place in Mongolia.
Deputy Prime Minister and Minister of Foreign Affairs Saleumxay Kommasith led a Laotian delegation to visit Mongolia from September 2 to 5 at the invitation of his Mongolian counterpart, Battsetseg Batmunkh.
The two ministers agreed to strengthen cooperation in the areas of trade, investment and tourism, the Lao Foreign Ministry reported in a press release.
Furthermore, the ministers agreed to encourage Mongolian companies to do more business with Laos to take advantage of the growing connectivity facilitated by the Laos-China Railway.
The ministers said they greatly appreciate the growing traditional friendly relations and cooperation between the two countries over the past six decades since the establishment of diplomatic relations between the two countries (September 12, 1962-September 12, 2022).
Meanwhile, the two countries have organized reciprocal visits by government delegations of different levels.
The ministers reviewed the implementation of the outcomes of the 11th Joint Commission Meeting on Bilateral Cooperation between Laos and Mongolia, which was held in 2018.
Cooperation between the two countries has expanded, particularly in the fields of public health, education and agriculture, and between the two national assemblies and the parties.
Although bilateral cooperation in the areas of economy, trade, investment and tourism remains relatively weak, relevant sectors in both countries have made efforts to encourage closer ties.
Laos and Mongolia have extended mutual assistance and support in regional and international arenas, especially in the framework of landlocked developing countries.
The Lao side expressed its pleasure to host the 12th meeting of the Joint Commission on Bilateral Cooperation between Laos and Mongolia in December this year, which will be chaired by the health ministers of the two countries.
Saleumxay and Batmunkh have agreed to organize activities to mark the 60th anniversary of diplomatic relations.
They also learned about development progress in their respective countries.
After their talks, the ministers signed a memorandum of understanding on cooperation between the two foreign ministries.
The ministers also witnessed the signing of a scholarship agreement between Laos and Mongolia from 2022 to 2027.
Through Minister Batmunkh, Deputy Prime Minister Saleumxay, on behalf of the Lao government, presented a friendship medal to the Mongolian government in recognition of the donation of 1,050 sheep to Laos in 2018.
During his visit, Saleumxay also visited President Ukhnaagiin Khurelsukh and Chairman of the State Great Khural, Gombojav Zandanshatar.
