The Fulbright English Teaching Assistant Program 2022-2023
The Public Affairs Section of the U.S. Embassy Ulaanbaatar is now accepting applications for the Fulbright English Teaching Assistant (ETA) program for the 2022-2023 academic year from English or foreign language departments at accredited universities. and vocational training centers (host institutes) . The HI application deadline is 8:00 a.m. on Monday, April 25, 2022later.
The Fulbright ETA program is sponsored and administered by the Bureau of Educational and Cultural Affairs (ECA) of the U.S. Department of State. The program aims to:
- Strengthen the teaching of the English language, while providing cultural information;
- Provide opportunities for personal and professional development and international experience; and
- Improve cross-cultural communication opportunities by ensuring the presence of a native speaker.
Fulbright ETAs are motivated, recent university graduates who are ready to serve as cultural ambassadors. Their responsibilities include:
- Co-plan and co-teach up to 20 hours of in-class speaking and speaking activities per week to intermediate or higher level students in English;
- Dedicate up to 10 hours of lesson preparation with the co-teacher per week;
- Organize up to 8 hours of extracurricular activities in English, such as a conversation club;
- Act as a resource person both at the host institution and in the community; and
- Give presentations on topics related to the United States.
Fulbright ETAs are not experienced teachers and should not be asked to design curricula, assess or grade lessons, or take on the teaching of an entire course without the involvement of a Mongolian teacher. ETAs are exchange students receiving a stipend, not employees of the host institution. Therefore, they are eager to learn from host institutions about teaching methodology and other aspects of vocational education.
The Fulbright ETA Program is a joint program of the Embassy and the Host Institute (HI) involving cost sharing by both parties. The program funds round-trip transportation from ETA to Mongolia, health insurance, monthly stipend, and pre-departure and in-country orientations. HI supports ETA accommodation, Mongolian visa and permit fees, and other program-related costs through funds or in-kind contributions. In addition to cost sharing, HI responsibilities include:
- Send up to three faculty members, including the designated ETA mentor and co-teachers, to participate in a 3-5 day orientation for ETAs in Ulaanbaatar in mid-August 2022. During orientation, HI participants will attend orientation meetings, make presentations about their school and participate in training in the methodology of co-teaching English as a foreign language. At the end of the orientation, a mentor or co-teacher will take the ETA to the facility to introduce them to the school, faculty, and housing. Please indicate in the application (#12) if your school will be able to comply with the orientation requirements.
- Provide ETA with a teaching program at the beginning of each semester;
- Assign a staff or faculty member to supervise/mentor ETA and assist ETA in their living environment;
- Assign two full-time co-teachers to teach and assist ETA in the classroom and in other areas related to ETA teaching duties;
- To assign an international/foreign relations officer to assist with visa and residency requirements:
- June 2022: Acquire an education/work permit (Department of Education and Labour) and visa permit (Office of Immigration);
- August 2022: Register the ETA at the immigration office and obtain a residence permit;
- June-July 2023: Assist ETA in the termination of the residence permit;
Note: As ETAs are teaching assistants, they are required to enter Mongolia on a C2 visa.
- Provide ETA with accommodation and a workspace; and
- At the end of each semester, write a feedback report to the Embassy with a brief description of the courses and activities carried out, an evaluation of the ETA and suggestions for improvements.
Eligibility conditions for HI:
- Be an accredited Mongolian university or vocational training center that does not currently offer major courses in English;
- Have students with intermediate or higher level English abilities;
- Have the motivation and the need to host an ETA;
